澳洲大火，社恐袋熊成为灾难中最厉害的“英雄”！

　　还记得当年澳洲的大火吗？

　　根据CNN当年的新闻，2020年的澳大利亚毁灭性的森林大火导致近30亿只动物死亡或流离失所。

　　Nearly three billion animals were killed or displaced by Australia’s devastating forest?fires in 2020.

　　世界自然基金会委托编写的一份报告发现，这一数字包括1.43亿只哺乳动物、24.6亿只爬行动物、1.8亿只鸟类和5100万只青蛙。

　　A report commissioned by the World Widelife Fund for Nature (WWF) found that this?figure includes an estimated 143 million mammals, 2.46 billion reptiles, 180 million birds, and 51 million frogs.

　　世界自然基金会澳大利亚首席执行官德莫特·奥戈尔曼说：“这一发现令人震惊。在人们的记忆中，很难想象世界上任何地方还会发生另一起事件导致这么多动物死亡或流离失所……这是现代史上最严重的野生动物灾难之一。”

　　“The?findings are shocking. It’s hard to think of another event anywhere in the world in living memory that caused?such a massive loss of animal life or displacement,” said WWF-Australia CEO Dermot O’Gorman. “This is one of the most severe wildlife disasters in modern history.”

　　The furry critters also provided another life raft for animals who were fleeing the devastating fires which rocked Australia for months last year. They allowed small mammals to shelter in their burrows in order to survive the infernos.

　　As they are so deep underground,?they provide a much more stable temperature than the air on the surface, thus offering a significantly safer environment for animals during high temperatures.

　　Their tunnels are long and intricate, spanning up to 200 meters, allowing wombats to live in several separate burrows throughout the year.

　　通常，常见的袋熊物种不会很好地忍受陪伴，大部分时间都是独自度过的。因此，它们庇护其他动物的事实更令人惊讶。

　　纪录片制作人Peter Hylands在拍摄火灾造成的破坏时，注意到一些动物毫发无损。由于灌木丛被大火完全烧毁，袋熊洞穴网络可以完整地看到，Hylands推测这些动物一直在使用洞穴作为庇护所。
