  Competition Events

  Competition Events

Fencingoriginated in Europe and is a sport that developed from ancient sword duels. Modern fencing is a traditional Olympic sport. It was first introduced as an official Olympic sport at the Athens 1896 Summer Olympics. Fencing became an official sport at the 7th Asian Games New Delhi 1974.

The Fencing competition of the Asian Games will take place from 24 to 29 Septemberat the Hangzhou Dianzi University Fencing Hall. It will feature individual and team events for both men and women, with a total of 12 gold medals to be awarded.

  Competition Rules

  Competition Rules

Fencing competitions are divided into three categories: foil, sabre, and épée. Each category has different rules for where hits are counted. In foil fencing, only hits with the tip of the sword count. Hits made with the sides of the blade are not valid. The valid target area is the torso, excluding limbs and the mask. Sabre fencing involves both thrusting and cutting. Points are awarded for both types of hits, but more often fencers score by cutting. The valid target areas include the torso, mask, and arms. In épée fencing, only hits made with the tip of the sword count. Hits with the sides of the blade are not valid. The entire body—torso, limbs, and mask—is considered the valid target area.

Fencing competitions take place on a 14-metre-long and 1.5-metre-wide metal carpet called piste. For semifinals and finals, the piste can be up to 50 centimetres tall. The Hangzhou Dianzi University Fencing Hall has 11 pistes, including five within the finals venue. The en garde lines are located two metres on either side of the centre line of the piste. The end lines, situated five metres behind the en garde lines, determine the length of the fencing area. An extension of 1.5 to 2 metres is located at the end of the piste behind each end line. During a competition, if a fencer’s feet cross the end line, they are considered hit. If a fencer steps out of bounds with one or both feet, they must return to the position where they step out and step back one metre. If a fencer goes out of bounds during an attack, they must return to the position where the attack is launched and step back one metre. If a fencer’s feet are already beyond the end line when an out-of-bounds penalty is enforced, they will be considered as hit.

During the competition, fencers must use weapons, equipment, and attire that adhere to the standards set by the International Fencing Federation.
