　　青年数学故事作者（YMSA）竞赛

　　青年数学故事作者（YMSA）竞赛是世界上第一个年度国际竞赛，旨在鼓励世界各地的青年数学学习者（8-15岁）通过创作他们自己的数学故事图画书，将他们的数学学习嵌入到一个有意义和有吸引力的环境中。这项比赛由MathsThroughStories.org组织。今年，青年数学故事作者（YMSA）竞赛收到了来自全球 12 个国家 62 所学校和在家上学网站的 626 名学生的参赛作品。

　　这次的获奖让翁欣觉得惊喜不已，这也是她第一次参加这种用数学知识讲故事的比赛，她觉得很有意思。《Bunny Annie shooting a basketball》这个故事灵感来源于一次翁欣的数学课，为了学习二次函数抛物线，她的数学老师Yarina将课堂搬到了体育馆，运用了投篮的抛物线来进行教学二次函数。

　　

　　值得一提的是，这种有趣的数学课在NBHIS并不是特例。自行设计《愤怒的小鸟》新关卡、利用线性代数制作精美纱线画、为学校重新设计停车场等等都是能在NBHIS数学课堂上见到的内容。

　　

　　

　　数学老师Yarina坦言：“我想通过趣味的课程设置改变同学们对数学的刻板印象，而将数学课程的教学实践与实际生活联动更是我一直坚持的目标与理念。”

　　青年数学故事作者（YMSA）竞赛参与者多是母语为英语的国家学生，翁欣能在其中脱颖而出，NBHIS的英语教育在其中起了重要作用。“我从幼儿园就在华茂学习，一直到现在，我从来没有上过外面的英语补习班。” 在NBHIS的课程设置体系中，除了中文课，所有的课程都是全英文授课的，而且由于很多课程都是外教授课，日常交流也都是用英语交流。这些如同助燃剂让翁欣的英语能力，无论是书面还是口头都有很大的提升。

　　翁欣也并不是一直是成绩优秀的孩子，刚升入初中时，由于初中数学更注重学科知识的学习，学术性更强，翁欣的数学成绩一开始并没有特别好。但是，坐以待毙不是翁欣的风格。她先去找Yarina老师讨论学习侧重点、薄弱点，然后自己也在课后做一些数学习题。前进的道路上，老师们和父母的开导和鼓励，让她慢慢开朗了很多，可以更好地投入学习。合理的规划+百分百的努力=喜人的收获，最终，翁欣的数学成绩开始逐步提升。“我现在很喜欢数学，我觉得数学真的太有意思了。”

　　NBHIS的教学，不仅仅停留在对学科专业知识的学习，也注重培养学生们全面发展的多维能力。翁欣喜欢音乐，从小学习钢琴、吉他，学校举办的各种音乐会让她在展现自我中逐渐变得自信。翁欣还喜欢画画，她会在空闲时涂涂画画，这个数学故事《Bunny Annie shooting a basketball》里的兔子形象就是翁欣的原创，在拥有了这个兔子IP形象后，整个数学故事也显得更加的有趣。

　　

　　在宁波华茂国际学校的这些年，在老师的带领下，翁欣参加了很多大型比赛，比如美国数学竞赛AMC、滑铁卢数学竞赛、世界学者杯……并获得了很多奖项。她说：“相较比赛结果，我怕更喜欢比赛过程中学到的知识，和伙伴的并肩作战的感觉。”

　　The Young Mathematical Story Authors (YMSA) competition is the world's first annual international competition designed to encourage young mathematics learners (ages 8-15) worldwide to embed their mathematical learning in a meaningful and engaging environment by creating their own mathematical story picture books.

　　https://www.mathsthroughstories.org organized the contest. This year, the Young Math Story Authors (YMSA) competition received 626 entries from 62 schools and homeschooling websites in 12 countries worldwide.

　　The win was a surprise to her as it was her first time. An exciting math class inspired her to develop the story"Bunny Annie shooting a basketball".

　　

　　To learn the quadratic parabola, her math teacher, Ms Yarina, moved the class to the gym and used the parabola of shooting a basketball to teach the quadratic function. Math teacher Yarina admitted, "I want to change students' stereotypes about math through a fun curriculum, and it is my constant goal and philosophy to link the teaching practice of the math curriculum with real life."

　　

　　

　　The Young Mathematical Story Authors (YMSA) competition participants are primarily students from native English-speaking countries. Wendy was able to stand out from the rest. One of the most critical reasons is English education at NBHIS played an essential role. "I've been studying at NBHIS since early years, and until now, I've never attended any English tutorial classes." In the curriculum system of NBHIS, except for Chinese classes, all classes are taught in English, and since foreigners teach many courses, daily communication is also in English. These are very beneficial for Wendy's English skills, both written and verbal.

　　Wendy was not always an outstanding student. When she first entered junior high school, she did not do particularly well in math because junior high school math is more academic and focused on subject knowledge. However, sitting on her hands was not her style. She first went to Ms. Yarina to discuss her learning focus and weak points and then did some math exercises after class herself. With the guidance and encouragement from her teachers and parents, she slowly became more enlightened and better engaged in her studies. Eventually, Wendy's math scores began to improve gradually. "I love math now, and I think it's so interesting."

　　At NBHIS, subject knowledge is taught and teachers focus on developing students' all-around multidimensional abilities. Wendy loves music and grew up learning piano and guitar, and the various concerts held at the school have helped her to become confident in expressing herself. She also likes to draw and paint, and she spends her free time painting and drawing. The rabbit in the math story "Bunny Annie shooting a basketball" is Wendy's original image. With this rabbit IP image, the whole story seems more interesting.

　　

　　During her years at Ningbo Huamao International School, under the guidance of her teachers, Weng Xin has participated in many large competitions, such as the American Math Competition (AMC), Waterloo Math Competition, and World Scholars Cup, etc. She said, "Compared to the results of the competition, I am afraid I like the knowledge I learned during the competition more, and the feeling of working side by side with my partner."
